The Long Road to Recognition

Antonio Carreño’s paintings reflect a steady evolution of technique and vision shaped by decades of exploration and experimentation. The works presented in this exhibition demonstrate a mature abstraction marked by sweeping gestures, layered surfaces, and a refined sensitivity to color and movement.

Drawing inspiration from landscapes and nature, Carreño explores the interplay of light, color, and texture through spontaneous yet controlled mark-making. Using brushes, palette knives, and spatulas, he pushes thick pigment across the canvas, allowing blended and unblended colors to interact organically. While earlier works often emphasized brighter hues and textured surfaces, this body of work moves toward a more restrained palette with subtly muted tones that reflect both introspection and the enduring influence of his Caribbean heritage.

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Carreño’s work carries an autobiographical undercurrent, shaped by memory, place, and process rather than representation. His paintings invite sustained looking, encouraging viewers to engage intuitively rather than search for narrative or form.

Carreño’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Latin American Museum of Modern Art (Washington, D.C.), the Dominican American Institute of Culture, the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, and Dillard University, New Orleans. This exhibition brings together 22 works that reflect both continuity and quiet transformation within his practice.
