Malaika Favorite

b. 1949

Ms. Favorite is a full-time artist and writer originally from Louisiana, currently residing and working in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Throughout her career, Malaika has shared her expertise by teaching at several educational institutions, including Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana; Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, where she served as an artist-in-residence; Louisiana State University; and Augusta College in Augusta, Georgia.

Her artistic practice primarily involves oil, acrylic, and watercolor mediums, along with innovative techniques, such as folded canvas. Malaika has received numerous accolades and grants, including the prestigious Fulbright-Hays study tour, the Georgia Council for the Arts, the Porter Fleming Foundation Grant, and the Puffin Foundation Grant.

Among her notable achievements is her published collection of poems and prints titled “Illuminated Manuscript,” which was released by New Orleans Poetry Journal Press. Malaika has exhibited her work nationwide, and her work can be found in prestigious collections such as the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia; the Alexander Museum of Art in Alexandria, Louisiana; the National Ecumenical Museum of Art in St. Louis, Missouri; and at Absolute Vodka in New York. In 1998, she received a commission from the Fulton County Arts Council to create 28 paintings for the Harriett G. Darnell Multipurpose Facility.
